Welcome

The Chr-easters are coming. You find them in the church pew every Christmas and Easter, the ones that send the ushers scrambling for every available metal folding chair and configuring seating arrangements that go against fire code but accommodate the faithful.

In this issue, local religious leaders share their views about our community’s state of spirituality. Churches have changed with the times, seeking relevancy in a world that spins faster and faster with instant communication and high-powered entertainment, distances of time and space obliterated by a mouse click. Church loyalty, for some, is non-existent as they shop for the right fit. Even though we may change churches and how we sing, our faith, hope and love remain constant.

Faith in a greater being and a greater good keeps people going, whether it’s a private prayer at home or a loud “Alleluia” in front of the pulpit. Faith feeds the soul and stirs the Chr-easters—demonstrating that more good than despair exists in the community around us. Regardless of your chosen religious vein or how, when and where you worship, let faith keep you going in the New Year. Hang on during the tough times and sing like the choir every chance you can. Happy holidays.

Until we decided to develop this issue of  City Magazine based around faith in Jefferson City, I really hadn’t given this topic much thought. I was born and raised in a Christian household, and that is how I live (or at least try to live) my life today. I have always had many Catholic friends and relatives in Jefferson City, and in recent years have become friends with people who attend the Jewish temple. Once again, I have to refer to living in my bubble. I had no idea Jefferson City had people who followed the Buddhist faith or that Jefferson City has a Buddhist center for worship. Look inside for perspective on the different types of faith found locally.

No matter what your beliefs are, isn’t it nice to know that Jefferson City offers places to worship for all different kinds of believers? The whole point of the holiday season is about believing, giving and sharing. When you are preparing for this season, I hope you read City Magazine and realize how lucky we are to live in such a diverse community and a free country that respects the beliefs of everyone. Not everyone is that lucky! I hope you have a joyous season!
