WelcomeFrom the Editor Factory life isn’t sexy. It’s not exciting. So why bring out Jefferson City’s industries for our cover story? Because these manufacturers not only represent a significant slice of Jefferson City’s economy and provide key employment, but they also are players for global industrial leaders. In this issue of Jefferson City Magazine, we salute our local captains of industry, often quiet players who make a big contribution to our community’s economic makeup, the nation and the world. The Jefferson City Scholastic facility is the primary warehouse and distribution center for the largest publisher and distributor of children’s books in the world. Our local ABB plant is part of a global company that helps to deliver two-thirds of the electricity in the U.S. RR Donnelley’s Jefferson City division is one of the largest book manufacturers in the United States. Unilever’s Jefferson City facility is the company’s largest personal-care liquids plant in the world. Read our cover story, on Page 17 to find out more. On the cover, Jefferson City Magazine features the work of local graphic designer and illustrator Gary Lister. Thank you, Gary, for sharing your incredible talent with us and helping to bring “Captains of Industry” to life! Jennifer Bondurant From the Associate Publisher Isn’t it fun to see a makeover on someone who has had the same hairstyle for as long as you can remember? They are beautiful people but have gotten caught up in their day-to-day routines of taking care of everybody else and have forgotten about themselves. I know you know someone like this! That is why City Magazine is starting a new regular feature called “It’s Your Turn Makeover.” We are looking for people in Jefferson City who give unselfishly to others but need and deserve a new look. LaSienne Salon and Day Spa delivered the goods for our first makeover. Check out the photos on Page 92. Kathy Hollaway and Mary Beth Hoey were our first makeover contestants. They were both a little nervous when they arrived at LaSienne, but the stylist made them feel comfortable and went to work giving Kathy and Mary Beth refreshingly new styles. They looked fabulous! The best part of the experience as an observer was to watch how Kathy and Mary Beth’s body language changed. They left LaSienne glowing with smiles and more confidence. Turn to the ad on Page 99 for more information about how to nominate someone you know for the next “It’s Your Turn Makeover.” Thank you, Charlotte and Lisa at LaSienne, for giving Kathy and Mary Beth such a wonderful gift.
