A new gathering place takes shape along Jefferson City's riverfront.
Every community has places that bring people together, where neighbors catch up, families make memories, and visitors discover what makes a city special. This fall, Jefferson City will welcome one of those places with the opening of the River Market.
The River Market is more than a new pavilion; it's an investment in creating a place where people can gather for generations to come.
Located in the lower yard of the historic Missouri State Penitentiary, the site has long been recognized as one of Jefferson City's greatest opportunities. Just steps from the Capitol, downtown, Riverside Park, Deborah Cooper Park, and the Missouri River, it's uniquely positioned to connect many of the city's most popular destinations.
Once used to house prisoners, the site is being transformed into a welcoming space for markets, local businesses, community events, and everyday gatherings. The project gives new purpose to a historic piece of Jefferson City while opening it up for the community to enjoy.
Bringing the River Market to life took years of planning and strong partnerships. Funding came from local, state, and federal sources, including the Missouri Department of Economic Development's Community Revitalization Grant and Local Tourism Asset Development Grant, along with cost-sharing partnerships with the State of Missouri, Cole County, and the Missouri Department of Conservation.
The project is part of a larger effort to bring new activity and investment to this part of the city. Across the street, Missouri's new State Public Health Laboratory is expected to bring hundreds of employees to the area each day, creating opportunities for nearby businesses.
From the beginning, the goal was to create a space that stays active year-round. Retractable glass doors, an indoor gathering space, heating, and a dedicated food truck plaza make the River Market flexible enough to accommodate farmers markets, concerts, festivals, private events, and community celebrations throughout the seasons.
When construction is complete, the City will transition operations to JC Parks. While the farmers market will be the cornerstone, visitors can also expect food truck gatherings, seasonal events, and other activities. JC Parks will partner with local vendors, artisans, nonprofits, and businesses to bring new experiences to the space.
The River Market is also the first major public investment in unlocking the potential of this part of the riverfront. Extending Chestnut Street, installing utilities, and improving public spaces lay the groundwork for future development while creating a destination that draws people to the area. As development continues, the River Market will help connect downtown with a growing part of Jefferson City's riverfront.
In the years ahead, new vendors will join the market, events will fill the calendar, and new traditions will begin to take shape. Whether stopping by for fresh produce, grabbing lunch from a food truck, attending a festival, or meeting friends on a Saturday morning, the River Market gives Jefferson City a new place to gather along the river.
